At Creekside, we’ve been in a series called “I Hear the Sound,” exploring the ways God speaks through silence, resurrection, and today—redemption.
Some sounds stick with us. I can still hear the lyrics of songs I grew up with. But more powerful than music are the voices that shape us—words from parents, teachers, and even our own inner critics.
In Genesis 3, Adam and Eve hid when they heard God walking in the garden:
Genesis 3:10 (ESV)“I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid…”
Why? Because sin distorts the sound. The voice that once brought joy now stirred shame. But even in their failure, God kept speaking. He promised redemption:
Genesis 3:15 (ESV)“He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
That promise was fulfilled through Jesus. After the resurrection, in another garden, Jesus called Mary by name—and everything changed:
John 20:16 (ESV)“Jesus said to her, ‘Mary.’ She turned and said to him in Aramaic, ‘Rabboni!’”
Jesus doesn’t shout to get your attention. Like Elijah discovered, God often speaks in a still small whisper (1 Kings 19).But to hear that whisper, we have to tune in.
How to Tune In to God’s Voice
Here are four practical ways we can tune in:
1. Read Your Bible Daily Get into God’s Word every day. Start by reading just one chapter a day and ask one simple question:“God, what are You speaking to me?”If you’re looking for a starting place, try the Bible App or our One-a-Day reading plan.
2. Fast from Distractions Maybe it’s time to limit your social media or even go cold turkey for a season. Create intentional spaces of silence—take a walk without your phone and just listen for God.
3. Worship Regularly Worship isn’t just for Sunday mornings. Turn on a worship playlist in your car, at home, or while walking, and let your heart re-tune to His presence.
4. Join Community God often speaks through people around us. Whether it’s a small group, a Bible study, or simply gathering with friends around a table—don’t walk this journey alone.
